PENINSULAR AND ORIENTAL STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY,

6th. July, 1898.

Sir,

125

With further reference to correspondence exchanged with regard to an application made by you for a refund of the sum of $2,022.85, Mail Money paid to this Company for the conveyance of Mails from Hong-Kong to Colombo en route to Bombay, the contention being that the conveyance of such Mails to Colombo is provided for in the Contract entered into by my Directors with H.M. Government, I have now the honour to inform you that in accordance with your request the matter was referred to my Head Office who write as follows:-

"We have considered the question raised in your correspondence with the Hong Kong Post Office, and it seems to us that the Company has correctly received the sum mentioned, seeing that the Mails were shipped for a port off the Contract Lines, and it was no fault of ours that they were not conveyed to destination as intended in our steamers, when we should have been legally entitled to the payments in question."

Honourable A.M. Thomson,
Postmaster General.
